CONSERVATIVE COUNCILLORS CHOOSE TO DEFEND GOVERNMENT INACTION RATHER THAN SUPPORT CARERS

Yesterday, at the Hertfordshire County Council Meeting, Tory councillors put support for the Conservative Government ahead of the needs either of unpaid Carers, or of our Care Workforce.
A LibDem motion asked the Council to call upon the Government to increase Carers' Allowance by £1,000 per year (£20 per week) and to honour its Queen's Speech commitment to establish a single watchdog to enforce employee's rights. Labour supported the motion but the Conservatives voted to deny an appeal to Government to support carers, whether paid or unpaid.
Ron Tindall, who proposed the Motion said: "At no time in the debate was one word expressed in defence of the Government, all we heard was obfuscation and a clear statement from Cllr Richard Roberts that he refused to criticise the government. Reports from Carers UK make clear the contribution of Carers to the nation's well-being saves the government around half a billion pounds per day. The failure of the government to recognise the additional burden on carers is shameful."
Nigel Quinton, who seconded the motion called upon the Conservative leadership to stop complaining about a 'confusing policy' - "I suspect Cllr Roberts is using this as an excuse to once again duck his responsibility to speak truth to power."
