Are Herts highways problems about to get worse?

Local Liberal Democrat county councillors are worried that recent 'slippage' in the Highways Integrated Works Programme (IWP) may be just the thin end of the wedge. Despite the fact that the Liberal Democrats have repeatedly sought assurances that all deferred work will be undertaken in due course, senior county council officers have so far not been able to guarantee that there will be no permanent reductions in the Highways IWP budgets.

Liberal Democrat County Concillor Malcolm Cowan (Handside and Peartree) commented: 'It is very worrying that there is no assurance that next year's programme will be maintained. It looks as if the budget may be cut to balance carrying this year's carry forward. It does seem we are in for continuing cuts in road maintenance. Promises already made may well be broken.'
